She was born on February 23, 1925 to the late Albert and Margaret (Klauser) Veit in Palisades Park, NJ. She grew up in Sussex, NJ and attended local schools.

After high school, Peggy wanted to follow in the footsteps of her father and grandfather and joined the U.S. Army. After the war, she met Robert Gierie Sr. and they were married in August 18, 1951. Together they had three children.

Robert acquired a teaching position at Sanford High School so the family relocated to Maine and have been here since.
