Russell H. Day, 91, of Shapleigh, died at his home on September 30, 2013.
Russell was born in Shapleigh on August 2, 1922 to Harold and Edith (Littlefield) Day. He was educated in the public schools of Sanford and graduated from Sanford High School in 1941.
Russell was elected selectman for the Town of Shapleigh for 22 consecutive years from 1955 to 1977. He served in the 98th Legislature, State of Maine in 1957, representing the towns of Acton, Alfred, Newfield, Shapleigh and Waterboro. He was a Past Master of Mousam Lake Grange, a former trustee of the Shapleigh Community Forest and was the first president of the Acton-Shapleigh Historical Society. Russell was also a poet. Many of his poems have appeared in local newspapers over the years and have been published by the International Library of Poets. He also compiled a book of poems called "A Light of Promise in my Window Tonight."
Russell was predeceased by two siblings, Rita Brown and Valerie Binette.
Surviving are six siblings, Violet Ricker of Springvale, Sammy Day and his wife Jerry of Springvale, Shirley Roux of Alfred, Betty Hachey of Springvale, Joyce Goodfield of Springvale and Ferne Penney and her husband Tom of Shapleigh and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
Visitation will be held from Noon to 1:00 PM with a funeral service following at 1:00 PM on Friday, October 4th at the Carll-Heald & Black Funeral Home located at 580 Main Street in Springvale. Interment will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Springvale.
